AN INTRODUCTION
TO THE INSECTS OF
THE EASTERN HIGHLANDS OF
PAPUA NEW GUINEA

The study of insects in tropical
countries such as Papua New Guinea has attracted many eminent Entomologists from
overseas. These people have come to the Eastern Highlands because we have a
complex climate which encourages some of the most significant insects
imaginable, there are several Birdwing butterflies, the largest moth in the
world (the Atlas Moth with a wingspan of almost 12 inches or 300 mm) all of
these butterflies and moths are found here in the Eastern Highlands.
From the Eastern Highlands there are to be found some of the most beautiful of
all butterflies with glittering colors and patterns.
Each and every butterfly has it's own food plant and many of these butterflies
are unable to survive without attendant ants - a truly symbolic relationship. It
is up to us to preserve these insects by not clearing all the land. Areas of
land should be preserved so that future generations can realise what we have
left and preserve them.
Children should be encouraged to appreciate nature and not to destroy. Nature
study classes should be introduced and the life histories of these insects
taught in school lesson time.
The writer of this article would be most
interested to assist if approached by school authorities for further help in
this field.
